Diving for sponges had been Kalymnians main occupation for hundreds of years. The island is also well known as “The Sponge Divers Island”.
Sponge diving has influenced the mentality and culture of Kalymnian people including traditions, food, songs, dances and social life. Diving and sea activities are nature for Kalymnian people.
Kalymnos diving history is strongly connected with the progress of diving techniques as exposed in the “Nautical Museum”. Τhe evolution of this accumulated diving experience today is being expressed by the four diving centers that operate on the island providing professional, educational and recreational services.
Kalymnos coastline offers exciting dive sites, full of caves, walls, reefs, wrecks and even a volcano crater. The sea bed is one of the most interesting in the Mediterranean with rich underwater fauna and flora, rare species and all these in crystal clear warm waters with amazing visibility.
Last but not least the island runs annually the only state diving school and operates a decompression chamber at the local hospital.
